The social media landscape can be as exciting as it is daunting. It is a unique opportunity to inform and entertain your customers, to interact with them and to get new leads. But it can also backfire, especially when it comes to inclusivity and representation. The backlash can be immediate and hard to recover from.

My three golden rules to set up and develop your presence on social:

  1. Yes, you have to be on social media, but you should only be where your customers are. That includes early adoption of new platforms which might be emerging. No point being on Twitter if your demographics is on Pinterest, and we’ll tell you that.

  2. Don’t be on social for the sake of it. If you don’t have the time or resource to manage multiple accounts, let’s identify together the most impactful one. Or you could hire us on a retainer to manage your social media content long term.

  3. Your social media content must sound and look like you. It might be a slightly cooler and out-there version of you, but your content still needs to align with the rest of you digital persona. This is where a brand book comes in handy.

Every industry has its own specificities and regulations when it comes to social media use and finance is no different (just ask Elon Musk…).

We were hired to consult on improving their social media presence by a big finance name. This included reviewing how their target market consume information on social, propose new content types and a calendar, and suggest ways forward to make their content inclusive
